For Lily DeMarco, change can't come soon enough. Laid off from her corporate law firm and living in her parents' basement in Paterson, New Jersey, for Lily, saying yes to a job on the Ramal Cady campaign is a chance to do something -- anything -- to shake up her stalled life. When she is assigned to rural Georgia, she points her Volvo south, and takes on the daunting challenge of trying to get the locals to vote for a black Presidential candidate in a region where the Civil Rights project is far from complete. Starting with a handful of volunteers in a shack on the wrong side of the tracks, Lily is eventually thrust into a leadership role. As the votes are cast, Lily realizes that she has never felt more alive than among fried pickles and SaveAlot, with a shotgun in the corner, within a community far away from anything she's ever known. And only when the race is nearly lost does she come to see what it would mean for her state to win. Battleground State is a funny, suspenseful, and deeply moving. Written by a former Obama campaign staffer, it is a loving tribute to every campaign whose outcome ever turned on the efforts of those on the ground.

This is a very impressive debut novel. I was engaged entirely and really was drawn into the story, which is really the whole point of reading a book. It's a lucid journey through the inside of a campaign from the eyes of people just like you and me, rather than a House of Cards style walk through the powerful halls of DC or a state capital. This is normal folks learning how to engage in the political process. What I really liked is Natasha's handling of characters and how she created believable, "real" people that spoke true to the way people talk.
The main character's arc is well handled and artfully subtle vs. what I imagine is a typical mistake of young writers -- that is, to make everything heavy handed. In fact, everything pretty much Natasha did had a very nice subtlety to it. The environment of a political campaign is dangerous because the risk for heavy handedness is high. Heavy handedness of ideology, heavy-handedness of character arcs or story arcs.. BattleGround State didn't fall into any of those traps. It was a serious story but had a lightness in just the right dosage.
What I most enjoyed was the tension main character had with the leadership. I loved her disdain of the local opportunistic politcians and her journey from revering her boss to finding his flaws and wanting to defy him in favor of what she thinks is the just path. If anything, I wanted more of that. I would have loved if the book had just gone on for another 100 pages and it been main character's attempt to undermine the leadership in favor of what she thought was right. Even if she took it too far and become unhealthily obsessed about defending her colleague. But that's just me and my sensationalist whims, having just watched House of Cards and Game of Thrones.
Really impressive and fun first novel. Awesome :)

Battleground State Natasha Patel 9781481234054 Books Reviews
I loved this novel about a young NY lawyer who joins the presidential campaign of the first black candidate and gets sent to the south where everything is totally unfamiliar to her. I've read plenty about the Obama campaign-- it is fictionalized here but still kind of recognizable--but I found it incredibly moving to see just how much it meant for a black man to run in the South and how hard it was to get people to believe that it really could happen. It was a totally different election than in my home state of NY. Plus it is funny and romantic and the second half is twisty and suspenseful in the most unexpected ways. Highly recommended.
As someone who has shied away from party politics over the last few election cycles, I was wary about reading a novel based on a campaign. I was, however, extremely pleasantly surprised when reading this book. It was a very human take on the nature of modern electioneering humorous, touching, scary, frustrating -- often all of these at the same time. The main character, Lily, is immediately recognizable as a real person, and not a super-powered protagonist we so often get in novels these days. She is flawed, funny, dedicated, self-doubting, and she instantly connects with the reader as someone we all can be. The cast of characters who get swept up in Lily's adventures are likewise people we all know, getting into situations we can all imagine would actually happen. Battleground State is also a great peek into the mercenary sensibilities of a national campaign, in which dedicated volunteers and staffers are pushed to their limits by candidates and their campaign advisors with little support or thanks.
I highly recommend this book.
While at first glance Georgia doesn't appear to be fertile ground for a campaign drama, "Battleground State" brings its colorful characters and unique political realities into relief against the background of a recently laid off attorney trying to find a new life.
Ms Patel is a talented young wordsmith who vividly recreates the heady atmosphere of 2008 when a jolt of energy was applied to the dying carcass of Georgia's democracy by a cadre of young, motivated volunteers. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
I wasn't sure I would enjoy this because I don't have much interest in campaign politics. And I certainly do not relate to being so enraptured with another person, much less a politician, to work on any campaign. But it was interesting to see an inside look on what it is like to work on a presidential campaign at the grassroots level. The characters were realistic and well-developed, the plot moved quickly, and it flowed well, making it difficult to put down.
What I probably liked most though was the way it portrayed the beauty of the South in all its flaws. It captures the close-mindedness, the weariness of outsiders and the sometimes frustrating slow pace of life. But it also captures the charm, the natural beauty and the way that it can win you over in unexpected ways.
This was a great start by an exciting young writer, and I look forward to reading what she produces next.
